In order to balance a chemical equation you need to make sure that the number of atoms on both sides of the equation are equal.

H2 + O2 = H2O

H = 2

O = 2

Products:

H = 2

O = 1

Change coefficient to 2:

H = 2 × 2 = 4

O = 1 × 2 = 2

H2 + O2 = 2H4O

H2 = 2H2 = 2 × 2 = 4

2H2 + O2 ⇒ 2H2O
